About

Acousticroof Info is now the final resting place of  acousticroof.ca.

If you are interested in the history of acousticroof.ca please see the post at https://acousticroof.info/uncategorized/history-of-acousticroof/

The site was always more popular with artists than venues and now ,when the artists need house concert venues more than ever,  they are mostly gone for all intents and purposes. We never ran the site as a business and in fact except for a few donations  we were out of pocket every year it ran. It was intended as a meeting place for artists and house concert hosts. The site was written in 2006 using FrontPage 2003 and MS Access 2003 which were out-of-date even then. Despite some time and effort in recent years my lack of budget and experience meant I was never able to convert the site to WordPress or even HTML without losing a lot of functionality. Recent years were spent cleaning horrible spam from the database almost daily. Because of these factors I have decided to close the website permanently. In the future I may use this site for posts about artists and music I like and any house concert venues that are still active.

History of acousticroof (2005-2020)

acousticroof.ca was never really about “acoustic”, as opposed to “amplified” music. The core aim of acousticroof was always to promote live music of any kind that could be performed in people’s homes. It didn’t even really matter if the venue was not in a home as long as the venue had the intimacy of a living room and an audience that was there to listen not party.

That’s another requirement for a house concert. The audience is there to listen not party with music as just background. The performers don’t necessarily need to be professional but they should be at least be serious amateurs not someone that knows a few chords to some old songs.

We got involved through a series of fortunate events:) In 2005 Jill Barber and Rose Cousins were starting to make a splash on the Halifax music scene. One of their mailing lists  announced that they were having a concert at their apartment. What a neat idea we thought so off we went to our very first house concert. It was a great show and when they asked if anyone wanted to have them perform in their house we jumped at the opportunity. Our very first show at our newly created Lift the Wind Concert Series starred Rose Cousins and Jill Barber!

acousticroof was started in 2006 by a local musician, Julian West,  and my wife, Paula Fredericks who hoped to promote house concerts for aspiring musicians. It was Rose Cousins who introduced us to Julian who had created acousticroof. When after about 9 months he no longer wanted to be involved we offered to take over the site.

Acousticroof was  been funded almost completely by us since then except for donations from some highly appreciated devotees.

To be continued…
